Death Is Not a Period, but a Comma
🔑 “None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” (1 Cor 2:8)
👉 Right where the enemy was sure he had won, God made the victory. The grave is a comma, not a period.
1. Opening Hearts
🥊 An old music video: Jesus and Satan boxing in a ring — fun, but it hides an idea the Bible never teaches: two equal fighters.
Some pulpits draw the devil too big (faith = a nervous tightrope); others erase him (everything = psychology). Scripture stands on neither side.
❓ Did Satan really think killing Jesus would end it? Scripture answers (v. 8).
2. Opening the Word
🔍 Who Are “the Rulers of This Age”? (vv. 6, 8)
Commentators are split: human rulers (Pilate, Herod, the Sanhedrin) or the spiritual forces behind them. v. 6 “doomed to pass away” (1 Cor 2:6) → most natural: both in view. This verse alone can’t reveal Satan’s thoughts.
But the forces behind were defeated at the cross: “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.” (Col 2:15) — “winners” who were really captives in Someone else’s parade.
👁️ He Knew Who Jesus Was — and Heard the Prediction
Demons knew Him: “the Holy One of God” (Mark 1:24). “Even the demons believe—and shudder!” (Jas 2:19)
The chief priests told Pilate: “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’” (Matt 27:63) — and set a guard.
🛡️ Scripture does not say how far Satan foresaw the resurrection. He knew WHO Jesus was; he did not know WHAT God would do through His death — a failure of judgment, not of information.
3. What This Means for Us
1. Can’t see what you don’t have. His formula: take, subdue, destroy. God’s: give yourself away (to him, suicide). Augustine: evil = absence of good — loveless, so blind to love.
2. Now it’s our turn. We calculate like takers too — “giving is loss.” “the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God” (Rom 8:7). ⚖️ But Satan is judged; our sin is a defeated tenant leaving a house with a new owner — and you grieve it; Satan cannot.
3. Same bait, then and now. All three temptations skip the cross (Matt 4:1–11). He knew the direction, not the achievement; he never read God’s “secret and hidden wisdom” (1 Cor 2:7). Today: “Take the result without the suffering”.
4. The cross was God’s plan. “delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God” (Acts 2:23). “through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil” (Heb 2:14) — through death, not around it. Promised in Eden: “he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel” (Gen 3:15).
5. The grave is a comma. He still “prowls around like a roaring lion” (1 Pet 5:8) — stay alert. “the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death” (Phil 3:10) — through, then out. Sickbed, collapse, a child not home, 30 immigrant years — not the end for those who trust Christ.
🚧 Three Fences: ① Suffering pays nothing — Jesus alone paid. ② Don’t manufacture crosses. ③ No “endure → reward” formula (Heb 11) — our hope is the risen Christ.
🥊 Not two equal fighters. ✝️ The cross was God’s plan. 🌅 The grave is a comma.
